Dealing With Body Image

Check out our new body-image MP3 here

Body Image is important. Even when we're grounded in our Square-Pegness - and happy with who we are, we're still going to be affected by the constant media focus on Perpetual Youth.

The first piece we shared on our "Dealing with ... Body Image" pages - which is actually the inspiration for the "Body Image" section, is "My Left Breast", written by Luna (below). It's beautifully on-target. Without preaching, Luna helps us open our minds to beauty - real beauty, which has nothing to do with matching looks with media models.

You can find the poem, "THIS is my body", written by Tina M. Marks Shirley here. Tina shared this poem in our first "This is not my real body!" tele-call.

We have an article on self esteem - which is a related theme. Erin, the founder of Homemomma.com, wrote this article for her site (for SAHM's: Stay At Home Mom's), but the subject - and Erin's tips - are universal.

At the bottom of the page you'll find "My Body of Work", written by awesome Jaime Adcock, from Style Beyond Measure (a site you'll love visiting!) Jaime describes Style Beyond Measure as "an on-line 'love letter' in appreciation of women's fashions, clothing, style and beauty that transcends what the fashion press dictates, and celebrates the essence of a women's individuality - Your individuality, Your style, Your beauty - what makes you unique!"

Are you interested in healthy ways to care for your face and body? Lauren, our Chief of Operations, hunted up some great personal care product information.

She says: "Ideal Bite sends out a daily green tip & is not preachy. They are youngish and funny, and they don't work for any company. The link goes right to the page with all their health/beauty/personal care tips".

Visit Ideal Bite here.

Lauren also found Skin Deep, a Cosmetic Safety Database. We've used this site to check which sunscreens work with the least side-effects (Laur became a real detective when Little Princess was living here. There's nothing like a beautiful little one to get you thinking about the future - taking care of each other and the environment!

You can visit Skin Deep here.

We are not connected with these sites in any way.

We ARE affiliated with Isabella - whose banner we have in the nav bar. This is a company we've been buying from for years. They have incredible body and face care products, inspiring books and gifts - and we're proud to point you their way!

p.s. Isabella is connected to Chinaberry, the best kids' lit site (and catalog to die for) you'll ever find. We are not affiliated with Chinaberry - but we ought to have stock there..oh how we love kids' books!!

My Left Breast
by Luna

My beautiful, gifted artist friend Denise Mihalik has always intrigued me with her self-portrait photos. She inspires me on so many levels, but what touches my spirit most is the honesty she seems to capture with her camera's eye. She has courage and confidence when she takes those pictures of herself. She is so beautiful, and she finds beauty where ever on her body she focuses the lens.

For someone who has always struggled with body image this has seemed like something impossible, something that I could never do. But, I did something really big one day not so long ago...I took a picture of my left breast, my naked left breast.

My Body of Work

by Jaime Adcock

I've discovered a nice secret that I want to share with you.

Lately, I've been actively "thanking" my body for all the good things its done for me.

Good things, such as being able to focus my mind which enables me to tackle stressful situations and handle them successfully; having the ability to hear and see and smell and taste all kinds of delightful things; to feel the softness I've discovered a nice secret that I want to share with you.

Sounds silly, I know. But, as I have begun to appreciate my body in a very literal sense, my body has begun to return my "thanks" by slimming down a bit!

Wow! How cool is that?!?

Is this a fluke? I don't know. But I share this in hopes that if you experiment with it, you too, will experience some type of wonderful gift of gratitude back from your body.

Here's how it began...One morning, I was getting ready for my shower, and as I dropped my robe, I caught sight of myself in the mirror. Amazingly, my first reaction was almost that of a separate observer - an admiring observer.
